What is a ‘Weekend’?

As we roll into our fourth week of our adventure, we are starting to feel like the Dowager Countess from Downton Abbey. The days are starting to blend together.

We have been very busy checking off all of the boat projects we need to complete before we cast off. When we bought Samba in the fall, we had inherited a boat that was very well fit out for the Chesapeake and beyond. The previous owners had sailed from Maine to the Bahamas and back multiple times; however, there are a few items we needed to improve for full time liveaboard sailing.

Most of the must-do items are safety related. The past two weeks we have:

  • Installed a new 45lb Mantus anchor and 250’ of new chain

  • Installed a new Lewmar windlass

  • Replaced the old name decal with a new port of call

  • Installed AIS (Automatic Identification System) and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)

  • Replaced the weatherstripping around the hatches

  • Started provisioning

  • Organized and cleaned the boat for move in

Our To-Do List Before We Cast Off

Thankfully we’ve been able to use Brian’s parent’s house as a home base this past few weeks. (Thank you Mom and Dad!) We’ve made a huge dent in our to-do list and have set a tentative cast off date of July 10th.

As we quickly approach our cast off date, we are starting to get excited about our new lifestyle. Forgetting what day it is can be liberating. Is this how retired people feel?
